Elections: Initiatives

These Initiatives will be placed on the ballot for the Undergradute Students of OSU to vote on.  If you would like a further description of the initiatives, please go to the Offical Documents Section.

Initiative 1 : USG Constitution

Initiative 1 is a revamped, rewritten version of the Undergraduate Student Government Constitution, prepared by a commission formed by USG. The rewrite involves two types of improvements. First, the commission fixed grammatical errors, ambiguities, and internal inconsistencies in the document. Second, the commission reworked the relationship between the three branches of government. The relationship between the executive and legislature was better defined, and the judiciary was made more robust. For more information, visit the New Constitution page.

Initiative 2 : BUS

This initiative will amend the Undergraduate Student Government constitution to replace the organization with a new government, the Board of Undergraduate Students (BUS), effective starting the 2009-2010 school year. BUS will be structured as a board with 13 members, a president and an oversight panel and aims to make student government more efficient.

The Supporters of this initiative maintain this website.

Initiative 3 : DSP

The Undergraduate Student Government will lobby University Senate to pass a referendum supporting the Designated Suppliers Program (DSP) for all commercial products bearing the Ohio State University logo. The DSP is a program to prevent clothing products with Ohio State University logos from being made in sweatshops.

Initiative 5 : SSDP

The Undergraduate Student Government will lobby the relevant University authorities to adopt the following policy: Penalties imposed by the University for the use and/or possession of marijuana or related paraphernalia on campus property, including but not limited to all outside areas and dormitories, should be no greater than the penalties currently imposed by the University for the use and possession of alcohol on campus property, including but not limited to all outside areas and dormitories. This referendum shall in no way interfere with the duties of local and state law enforcement agents.

Initiative 6 : Student Sections

The Undergraduate Student Government must organize and coordinate an effort to improve student sections and ticketing policies at all OSU athletic events to increase the number and quality of student tickets available, and must work to improve the size and quality of student sections at all major athletic events.

Initiative 7 : Branding

The Undergraduate Student Government must immediately begin to work with the City of Columbus and The Ohio State University to facilitate an off-campus branding project that installs welcoming structures in the University District (similar to the arches in the Short North area) to mark the boundaries of our university area.

Initiative 8 : AEG

The Undergraduate Student Government should commit $25,000 of its own money to the Academic Enrichment Grant program in the coming year and must at least double the number of enrichment grants given to OSU students for study abroad, research, conferences, and other extracurricular experiences. USG should also create a standing committee to oversee the program, must vastly increase and improve the marketing, and must receive and approve applications on quarterly or rolling basis.

Initiative 9 : Student Organization Initiative

The Undergraduate Student Government must institute a simple online system for any student organizations to directly apply for USG funding and must guarantee at least $100,000 of USG's money to be spent directly on supporting student organizations over the next term.
